Only use fertiliser where it’s needed. Better use of your soil testing and fertiliser budget.
FREE EVENT – Hosted by Burnt Creek Landcare Group and presented by Agriculture Victoria and Meridian Agriculture.
See how precision agriculture and other soil testing approaches can offer productivity and cost savings in fertility and liming.
See the outcomes of this project with paddock walk and discussion with the host farmers.
Established in 2019, this project examined the benefits of targeted nutrient management in grazing enterprises.
There is a lot of variation in soil characteristics within paddocks. However, in most dryland grazing systems, the conventional approach to nutrient management is to take one soil sample across a paddock. While this is quick and cheap, it hides the paddock variability that occurs in nutrients and pH. As a result, some areas are over-fertilized (with the potential for off-site impacts and is a waste of money) while other areas do not receive the nutrients required to sustain a profitable and resilient pasture base.
Brad Costin, Agriculture Victoria Land Management Extension Officer and Soil Scientist and Jim Shovelton, Director and Senior Advisor Meridian Agriculture will present the results of the project and show how to read a paddock for soil testing.
Paddock walk subject to site conditions on the day
